Banksy Officially Licensed "Peckham Rock". Framed with Museum grade acrylic glazing
Official Banksy Peckham Rock (As sold in The British Museum Gift shop 2018) and hand made description (copied from the original text) floated on hessian backboard, matching spacers, and museum grade acrylic, ready to hang.
33cm x 27cm x 4.5cm
In 2005, Banksy pulled off one of his signature acts of subversive art when he placed a fake prehistoric rock drawing on the walls of the British Museum. The drawing depicted a caveman pushing a shopping trolley, playfully mixing ancient history with modern consumerism. The rock itself was scrawled on with pen, a deliberate contrast to the ancient artifacts typically housed in the museum.
The sign next to the piece read:
"This is a fake rock."
This tongue-in-cheek addition to the museum’s display played with the idea of authenticity and the value we place on artifacts, while also mocking the commercialization of culture. It was a typical Banksy piece — blending humor, critique, and irony in a way that encouraged viewers to rethink the world around them.
